Me and Earl and the Dying girl. Jesse Andrews. 2012. Abrams Books. 304 pages. (Source: Barnes and Noble)
Quick summary:
Greg Gaines planned on spending his senior year flying under the radar, making movies with Earl (best friend) and maintaining his mutual ground with all the cliques at school. Well that is until his mom forces him to befriend the girl with cancer. Rachel Kushner. In this you see Greg go on his own very weird journey of self discovery.
I had found out this was going to become a movie before I knew it was a book. I'm the type of person who has to read the book before the movie. I mean I had been anticipating buying the book this summer when I had time to read it. Let's just say that this was not what I was expecting. That is not to say that it was horrible, in fact I still loved it. I wouldn't say it's for everyone. It was a book that I had to stop every few chapters or so just to break it up. I thin
k Jesse did a wonderful job conveying the fact that not every book is all happy endings. We tend to think that the girl is going to get the boy and some how the relationship works out in the end. These are just unrealistic expections. This is a John Green meets an emotionally detached teenage girl. I only hope that the movie was able to capture this beautiful journey in this unconventional story.
All in all I'm happy that I got to read this book. It really opened my mind that happy endings are never guaranteed.
